The Ascension Football Group Invitational wrapped up after three days of high-level youth football in the Cayman Islands.
The invitational opened on 30 Jan. at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex with the New York Red Bulls U14 securing a 2-0 victory over Jamaica’s Cavalier Football Club.
This was followed by a defensive encounter between the Cayman Islands U15 National Team and Inter Miami U14, which resulted in a 0-0 draw.
As the tournament progressed into its second day on 31 Jan., the Red Bulls continued their winning form with a narrow 1-0 win over the Cayman squad, while Inter Miami earned a 2-0 victory against Cavalier FC.
The final day of competition on 1 Feb. saw the Cayman boys secure a 3-1 win over Cavalier FC in a match hosted in Cayman Brac.
In the senior fixture of the day, the Cayman Islands Senior National Team defeated the Ascension Caribbean Showcase Select with a 2-0 scoreline.
The youth tournament concluded with the New York Red Bulls maintaining a perfect record by defeating Inter Miami 4-0.
Personal development
Claudio Garcia, Cayman’s U15 head coach, noted that a primary objective for the Cayman squad was each player’s personal development.
“First of all, at this age, improvement and development comes first. Winning is part of it, but winning and losing is part of the game, but that development, especially as an individual [is truly important as] we want to build some good young individuals [so] that in the future, Cayman could be proud of them. So that’s the first part,” Garcia said.
Garcia added that the invitational was utilised as an opportunity to prepare several of his U17 players for upcoming qualifiers.
“We are using this tournament to expose some of our U17s that are going for the next U17 World Cup qualifiers, so sometimes some of our tactical orientation in this invitational is more [geared] towards that event and less to this one,” he shared.
Garcia also expressed his gratitude to the organisers noting that “this exposure is amazing … especially for our boys.”
Exceeding expectations
The event’s impact extended beyond the pitch, drawing a significant audience to the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Ethan Rivers, owner of the Ascension Football Group, observed that the turnout surpassed initial projections, stating “I wasn’t expecting a huge crowd, but it was a very, very big crowd from the start.”
Rivers noted that the invitational serves as a valuable benchmark for local players, allowing them to see the standard required to compete at a professional academy level.
“It’s more about the fans and the young players here, seeing what they could potentially have, what players they could look up to because it’s the standard that we all need to live to. We can’t just think, ‘We’re from Cayman, we can’t compete.’ I think seeing it is kind of believing it,” Rivers said.
