The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service has confirmed that two Cuban migrants have escaped from the detention facility on Fairbanks Road, George Town.

A spokesperson for the police press relations unit said, “The migrants escaped from Fairbanks earlier today.

“At this time, we do not believe they are dangerous. Efforts are already underway to locate them and more information will follow.”

Migrants typically come ashore with very little money and while it is possible that the escaped Cubans may already have some established connections in the Cayman Islands, residents are reminded to be vigilant and be aware that it is a criminal offence to harbour illegal immigrants.

The Compass has reached out to the RCIPS to see if the photos taken during the processing of the two escaped Cubans, can be released to the public, and whether they are encouraging any additional vigilance in the area close to the detention centre, to keep boats secure and vehicles safe.
