King Charles III to make historic Bermuda visit after US tour

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to visit Bermuda in early May, in what officials are describing as a milestone moment for the island and the wider network of British Overseas Territories.

The visit, scheduled for 1–2 May, will follow a state visit to the United States.

According to the Cayman Islands Governor’s Office, the Bermuda visit will follow engagements in Washington, D.C., New York and Virginia between 27 and 30 April. The Bermuda leg of the trip will then shift focus to the UK’s relationship with its overseas territories.

The Government of Bermuda said the trip will mark the first visit by a reigning sovereign to the island in 16 years and King Charles III’s first visit to any British Overseas Territory since his coronation.

Details published on the Royal Family’s official website noted that the king and queen will undertake a state visit to the United States to celebrate the historic ties and modern bilateral relationship between the two countries, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence.

US President Donald Trump has previously expressed admiration for the royal family and visited the king at Windsor Castle in September 2025, where he was welcomed with a military band.

Visit to Bermuda

Governor Andrew Murdoch said Bermuda is preparing to welcome the king with a formal ceremony that will include a Guard of Honour mounted by the Royal Bermuda Regiment and a 21-gun salute.

“The king’s programme will showcase the very best of Bermuda and provide many opportunities to engage with communities across the island,” Governor Murdoch said.

Planned engagements reflect a mix of cultural, environmental and strategic priorities.

The king is expected to meet young people participating in a ‘living classroom’ initiative run by the Bermuda Zoological Society, where students take part in hands-on conservation activities focused on protecting local habitats and restoring native flora and fauna.

In Hamilton, he will engage with members of Bermuda’s creative industries, highlighting the island’s cultural sector, before visiting a museum exhibition exploring Bermuda’s historical links to the transatlantic slave trade.

The programme also includes meetings with youth organisations and athletes preparing for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as well as a visit to the waterfront to observe seafaring activities.

Security and maritime operations will be featured, with the king set to formally open the new Great Bay Coast Guard Station and receive briefings on efforts to tackle illegal activity at sea.

The visit will also include discussions with the UK Space Agency on plans to install a telescope on the island as part of international efforts to track space debris, supporting international space sustainability.

Historically, royal visits to Bermuda have been rare. The king last visited in 1970, when he read the Throne Speech to mark the 350th anniversary of parliamentary government.

The most recent visit by a reigning monarch was in 2009, when Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip attended celebrations marking the island’s 400th anniversary of settlement – the final Overseas Territory visit of her reign.

While King Charles III has visited the Cayman Islands on several occasions in the past, there are currently no announced plans for a return trip.

“Any future visits to the region will be confirmed by the palace through the normal channels,” said the Cayman Islands Governor’s Office.
