Editorial for 20 January: Enjoy Cayman food and sport

Welcome to another three-day weekend in the Cayman Islands, thanks to
National Heroes Day on Monday.

We hope you join us in congratulating the family of the late William
Warren Conolly as he is being named our latest National Hero on Monday.

This year’s National Heroes Day especially honours education pioneers
and more than 60 are being lauded for significant contributions to this area.

This is the second year that Order of the Cayman Islands medals will be
presented. Recipients are being recognised for service in diverse areas, from
shipping and medicine to music and sports. Four long-serving civil servants are
also being recognised.

We encourage residents and visitors to trek downtown Monday to honour
Mr. Conolly and his family and the others who are being lauded.

Now that the holidays are over, 2012 is in full swing and this
weekend’s activities are proof.

Culinary Month continues this weekend and involves the Taste of Cayman
and the East End Surf Challenge. All events will involve eating and two will
offer competitions – one for the best heavy cake and the other for the best
fish tea.

Those who attend the East End Surf Challenge on Monday will get to
sample some of the finest fish tea on Grand Cayman during the Flowers Bottled
Water Fish Tea Cook-Off. This year there is an added incentive for the winner
of the fish tea cook-off, as the winner will get a spot at the All Things
Cayman booth at Taste of Cayman.

This promises to be a jam-packed weekend of food, honours, watercraft
racing, sports on the beach and more.

It is our sincere hope that it is a safe weekend for all involved. If
you are going to drink this weekend, please find a designated driver.

And while the East End Surf Challenge is all about speed, we hope that
the speed is kept on the water by the experts riding their watercraft and not
transferred to our roadways.

We hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable weekend tucking in to some
great food, remembering our heroes and enjoying sport.
