HSBC Cayman has announced its commitment to the Cayman Islands Junior Achievement ‘Corporate Ambassador’ programme by promising an annual donation of $10,000 for a three year term.
Mr. Gonzalo Jalles, chief executive officer of HSBC Cayman, said the bank was pleased to partner with Junior Achievement of the Cayman Islands to help build the minds of tomorrow.
“We believe in the potential of every child participating in the wonderful programmes run by Junior Achievement, and it is this belief that motivates us to make a positive impact in the lives of these children and the Cayman community,” he said. “This donation is an investment in the future of the youth of our Islands. Through our partnership with Junior Achievement we believe we can make a real difference.”
Paul Byles, president of Junior Achievement said he was grateful for the commitment offered by HSBC and was pleased the new Corporate Ambassador programme was attracting the support of some of Cayman’s leading businesses.
“Large donations such as those promised through the Corporate Ambassadors program enable us to make long-term, strategic plans for Junior Achievement Cayman,” he said. “And through realising these plans we will have a positive and sustainable impact on the school children of Cayman.”
The focus of the Junior Achievement programme is on nurturing and developing participants and building their educational ambitions by providing opportunities for social development, academic enrichment and personal growth. Junior Achievement is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the Cayman Islands in 2012.
Walkers
In recognition of the serious issue of domestic violence, Walkers’ Human Resources Department organised a special ‘Dress Down Day’ where staff made a donation to the Crisis Centre in order to dress in casual clothes on Friday, 10 February. In addition to the dress down fundraising drive, Tiffany Laurie, executive legal secretary with Walkers’ Dubai office, baked a batch of cupcakes for the staff in the Cayman Islands office to buy in aid of the CICC.
Tiffany Laurie, who formerly worked with Walkers in Cayman before relocating to Dubai, is a master baker and designed the cupcakes especially for the Cayman Islands Crisis Centre.
“The people involved with the Crisis Centre are wonderful. They work so hard and dedicate their lives to bring peace and joy during devastating times,” said Tiffany, whose cupcake design featured a butterfly representing freedom and a purple ribbon to represent awareness of abuse.
In total Walkers’ staff collected CI$1,467.50 for the CICC, which was presented to Executive Director Renee Carroll-Grate.
RBC Wealth Management
RBC Wealth Management has donated funds, raised by staff in a dress-down fundraiser, to the Cayman Islands Youth Development Consortium a local nonprofit, nongovernmental organisation geared toward creating a positive environment for young people to grow and develop and helping them reach their full potential.
Director of CIYDC Sylvia Wilks said: “We are delighted that RBC has become an asset patron of CIYDC. Their generous contribution has helped us to accomplish our goals and we are extremely grateful for their support and that they have acknowledged the importance of our cause. The support of local businesses like RBC Wealth Management is key for the continued development and success of our organisation. Appleby
Appleby participated as a major sponsor in the recent Chamber of Commerce Careers, Education, Training and Jobs Expo held Friday, 3 February at the University College of the Cayman Islands. The Expo provided an opportunity for students and professionals to explore the opportunities available in the job market and for Appleby to present itself as an employer.
“By being a major sponsor of the event, Appleby re-enforced its commitment to education, sports and the arts,” said Huw Moses, managing partner of the Appleby Cayman office. “Visitors to the Appleby booth learned about the firm through an informative PowerPoint presentation and custom brochures that spoke to opportunities within the Cayman Islands office, such as firm internships, employee training, the AS and A Level Programme and Appleby’s annual legal scholarship.”
In addition to the promotional items and informative literature students and working professionals expect to find at the Expo, Appleby offered visitors to its booth the opportunity to win random prizes including a brand new seven-inch touch-screen Amazon Kindle Fire and Kindle accessories. 15-year-old Tarick Millwood, a student of Clifton Hunter High School, was the lucky winner of the Kindle bundle and nine other persons won gift bags from Appleby.
In other news Shaun Tracey joined the firm as an associate in the Litigation and Insolvency Practice Group from leading UK law firm, Simmons & Simmons. He will focus primarily in the areas of insurance and reinsurance dispute resolution, negligence claims, fund and shareholder disputes, and fraud litigation.
Mr. Tracey has expertise in complex, high-value professional negligence and directors’ and officers’ claims in the financial services sector and has handled contractual disputes, fraud claims and regulatory investigations and insurance coverage disputes. He has also undertaken successful secondments to a division of Barclays and Travelers Insurance Company.
