“Lord what a day; look at the displays”, is part of the chorus of a Jamaica Farewell folk song that students from Little Cayman Education Centre took and made their own during the opening ceremony of the second annual Little Cayman Agriculture Show.
About 350 people attended the event throughout the day on Saturday, 24 March and purchased most of the 1,800 fruits, plants, herbs or seedlings the Cayman Islands Department of Agriculture brought over to sell and help promote backyard farming.
In addition to the plant sale, there was a lot of food and other items on sale. Entertainment throughout the day included Mel McCoy’s ‘Localz Band’, ‘D Government Band’, a demonstration by law enforcement and emergency services and a dog show.
Johnny Johnson provided tractor rides. Franklin Bodden and Mirelda Messias were crowned King and Queen of Little Cayman Agriculture Show, respectively.
The Minister’s Special Awards for Agriculture Spirit – Youth went to Little Cayman Education Services students. In the adult category of the Minister’s Special Award, Debbi Truchan, the chairwoman of the Little Cayman Agriculture Show, took top honours.
The show was held at the Little Cayman Museum and Marine Museum Grounds.
Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, the deputy premier and government minister responsible for agriculture, said she hopes the event will help pave the way for the future for agriculture on the island.
In addition to presenting the family of Mr. Linton Tibbetts with an award, Ms O’Connor-Connolly honoured the Tibbetts family by planting a Nam Doc Mango tree in the family’s Garden of Eden, located on the Museum grounds.
“Agriculture is alive and well in Little Cayman,” Ms O’Connor-Connolly said. “It is good to see that everyone here grows a little bit of something and the Agriculture Show promotes the growing attitude amongst the population.”
