As Cayman volleyball looks to grow, one of its priorities is to generate more nation-wide support.
The West Bay Sports Committee recently wrapped up the 2012 West Bay Community Volleyball League. Matches took place at the Sir John A Cumber Primary School hard court.
For Cayman Islands Volleyball Federation President Noel Williams, the competition is about attracting a wider range of participants.
“The West Bay community league has been going on for about three years now,” Williams said. “The federation has been supporting this league from the start, giving them balls, equipment, referees (on occasion) to help host the league. The federation would like to thank the organizers of the West Bay league for doing a very good job.
“East End also has a league and we would like to have one of these leagues in Bodden Town, North Side and George Town. Every district needs a competition like that. It’s good for volleyball and that’s the goal: to have volleyball being played in every part of Cayman.”
West Bay would crown a pair of new, first-time champions in North West Point and the Bayas. North West Point, behind Jackie Bodden, edged out the Jumpers for the adult title while Cline Glidden Junior and the Bayas downed Travis Stroup and Wesleyan for the youth championship. Jim Stroup guided Wesleyan to a third place finish for the adults, beating Nicholas Roberts and 2011 champions Above the Net.
For Bodden, who works as a travel agent, the competition is key for highlighting aspiring talent. “It was great to win,” Bodden said. “It just shows that we have very talented youngsters amongst us who will one day prove themselves and represent Cayman at a professional level in volleyball.
“The competition for me, and for our team, is not about the win because we feel that all who participate are winners. Also I am very happy to be a part of the West Bay Sports Committee and I am even happier that the youth are involved.”
The competition featured young talents like April Ebanks, 15, Chante Smith-Johnson, 15 and Krista Ebanks, 16. The federation also had a substantial presence as vice president Kennedy McGowan served as referee for the finals and assistant junior national coach Davison Ruwende played for the Jumpers.
Aside from the community leagues, focus locally will be on the upcoming annual general meeting. The University College of the Cayman Islands multipurpose hall is slated to host the proceedings at 6pm on 15 May.
