Gillian Lee is on the hunt for Cayman’s best youth netball talent.
The technical director for Cayman netball is conducting tryouts for the national Under-21 team. The Cayman Islands Netball Association is sending a squad to the World Youth Netball Championships in Glasgow, Scotland next August.
Lee, who is also Cayman’s national netball coach, states she is keen to see loads of athleticism and discipline.
“I’m very excited about the prospect of seeing the talent in the Cayman Islands,” Lee said. “The age range is 16-21, born 1992 or later. I’m looking for athletic, committed, disciplined and self-motivated netballers who want to learn about the game. I’m not asking for much am I?
“I can teach them the game of netball, but it is the commitment and self-motivation that is vital. So even if players haven’t played netball for a while, it would be great to see them at trials.”
Try out sessions will take place on: Monday, 17 September, 5-7pm; Wednesday, 19 September, 5-7pm; Monday, 24 September, 5-7pm; Saturday, 29 September, 8-10am and Sunday, 30 September, 4-6pm.
Selected players will be posted on the association website on Monday, 1 October. All players are required to fill in a registration form prior to the selections, which can be found at caymannetball.ky/development/national-teams.
Lee states the tryouts have an added benefit for young ladies, aside from making the national team.
“The team is competing in Scotland in August 2013 but players need a trial now for the team. If they miss the try-outs, which start next Monday, they will miss this great opportunity.
“Part of the programme will include helping the players plan their schedules so that all facets of their life can be succeeded in, from study to family to sports and so on.”
News of the tryouts comes as the association has a number of initiatives in the works. Umpire development sessions will be taking place next weekend, 14-16 September, with Yvette Smith and will be geared to all umpires and interested persons. The season opening uniform parade takes place on 3 November with the national women’s league commencing on 15 November.
The summer mixed league is also expected to take place during September and October at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre. Matches are scheduled for Thursdays and Saturdays at 6.30pm. Some six teams have signed up in the Blazers, Rising Stars, Unity, Lone Star-Boos Mix, The Bold and the Beautiful and Cayman 27.
