Gamebirds flock back to the rink

Roller hockey makes its return to the Cayman sports scene.

Kings Sports Centre hosted the first three matches of the 2012 Fall Adult Roller Hockey League on Tuesday. A number of the usual talents were on display like Rob Rintoul and Nigel Windsor.

All eyes figure to be on the Gamebirds, who hoisted the iconic Cherry Cup during the spring competition. Brendon Malice captained the newcomers past fellow rookie squad the Club House Sharks, who were the regular season champions.

The two-game sweep saw goalie extradonaire Randy Cannon and scorers Eric Mildenberger and Curtis Appleyard steady the winners past the likes of Joe Jewitt and Dan Etherington.

Club House were heavy favourites heading into the finals. They claimed the regular season crown at 11-1, had the league’s best offence (scoring 99 goals), the top goalie in Scott Hughes (82.6 save percentage and 23 goals allowed, both tops in the competition) and the scoring champion in Rintoul (26 points off 14 goals).

It should be noted that roller hockey has made a greater push to be active throughout the year. After the spring league ended in May, a summer tournament took place at Kings from June to August.
