Dancehall’s finest Konshens will be ripping the Lions Centre during his Cayman Islands debut.
The Jamaican urban musician is headlining a special concert in Grand Cayman called 1,2,3 Olympic Badness, celebrating the massive success of the Jamaican team in the Olympics plus, of course, the small matter of the 50th anniversary of independence.
“We have been trying to come to Cayman for a while,” explains the Kingston hero. “We are most definitely looking forward to that and looking forward to meeting everyone. Of course, there is a massive amount of Jamaican people in Cayman as well.”
Konshens recorded his first hip-hop song in 2000 and one year later, he met his current producer Phillip Carroll of X Factory Studio/Records.
In 2010, Konshens won first prize in the Converse Get Out of the Garage Urban music contest along with being nominated for the second year in a row for Best Rap Artist at the 4th Annual DMVEntertainment Awards. Konshens’ hit, Stop Sign is ranking high up the BBC Radio Dancehall charts.
The artist’s hits have included Winner, Rasta Impostor, This Means Money, Good Girl Gone Bad, Gal Dem A Talk, Realest Song, Represent, Do Sumn and Forward. The music video for Winner has more than 786,000 views on YouTube.
Multidimensional
Weekender is keen to really understand what the vibe of it is all about. So we ask.
“My name is Konshens, and there is a conscience side to what I do,” says the musician.
“The show is multidimensional and there are lots of aspects to it. I try to reflect my life one hundred per cent and what that is all about. It is from all aspects, trying to come from every angle of everyday life in my show.
“Then the true element is entertainment; I would say I am a master in the art of entertainment. At the end of the day people never come to see a teacher, they come to be entertained. It is all about good songs, proper delivery, high energy and giving education at the same time,” he says.
Konshens is developing his own record label, a process he says is very enjoyable and also at the same time sends a message to the youth that great things can be accomplished with belief and hard work.
“You can get results; I am living proof,” declares the singer.
Promotion for his latest album continues and during 2013 he is looking forward to starting to record a new LP and spreading the word further, increasing an already-impressive fanbase. But in the meantime, his Cayman debut is coming around fast. Any message for the fans? “Yeah I wanna big up all of the Cayman fans, you know, and all of the Jamaicans there too – one big up. You are in for a big show and will not leave disappointed.”
