High Rollers skating to clip Gamecocks’ wings at Kings

Hockey fans in Cayman can see more drama in March. 

Kings Sports Centre continues to host three competitions targeting all ages and ability levels. Tuesday nights feature Cayman’s national inline hockey league. 

The next pair of roller hockey games take place this Tuesday, 5 March. At 8pm, the Mepco High Rollers battle the Burger King Gamebirds while the Cayman Hot Sauce Flames challenge the Deloitte Sharks at 9pm.  

The 2013 season started in late January with the early focus being on Deloitte, who emerged national champions for the first time last year.  

Deloitte’s title came through sweeping the Flames in the Cherry Cup finals. Rob Rintoul was the Sharks’ top scorer while the Flames featured young prodigy Jean-Louis Beaudet.

Thursday nights play host to season 12 of the national ball hockey league, put on by the Cayman Islands Ball Hockey Association. The next matches in the 2012-2013 campaign are this Thursday, 7 March, as the Deloitte Devil Rays battle team Lone Star at 8pm with the Barracudas challenging the Sharks at 9pm. 

Based on the last available league standings, Deloitte and the Barracudas have the early focus with both teams having 6-4-2 records. Leo Kassam of Deloitte was the star player with league-high eight goals and 14 points. 

On Saturdays, the national youth roller hockey league takes place. Action for the 2013 season is being split up into three main age divisions – Squirts 13-Under, Mites 10-Under and Atoms 8-Under. There is also a Tykes 6-Under practice group and a learn-to-skate programme. 

A number of star young talent is on display. Prior to last weekend, Ethan Finlason had 16 goals for the Jets in the Squirts division, Andrew Hastings posted nine goals for the Deloitte Hurricanes in the Atoms category and Jabari Waldron notched a league-high 24 goals for the Ecay Traders in the Mites segment.
