Anglin's sentencing adjourned again

Deputy Premier and Education Minister Rolston Anglin has had his sentencing adjourned for careless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol. He was to have appeared before Magistrate Kirsty-Ann Gunn on 19 March.

Mr. Anglin is in Brazil, attending a hedge fund forum (Caymanian Compass, 13 March).

Crown Counsel Aaliyah McCarthy confirmed that his matter had been adjourned administratively until next Tuesday, 26 March.

Mr. Anglin pleaded guilty to the charges, which arose from a single-car accident on West Bay Road last May. His sentencing was originally postponed because his attorney, Steve McField, indicated that Mr. Anglin wished to attend a DUI-education programme run by the Counselling Centre.

  1. Interesting way to deal with this!

In the UK the policy is to get drunk drivers off the road ASAP, if possible in court and banned within two-three weeks of the offence being committed but I think the record was three days – this farce has been dragging on for something like ten months.

The UK’s drink driver education courses only count towards remission on the driving ban (they normally give a three-month reduction) after it has been imposed, they do not figure in the pre-sentencing arguments.

This should have been before the courts and settled in June/July last year because the current situation undermines all the hard work the RCIPS has put in to tackle drink driving.

I think someone needs to take a long hard look at what went wrong here and make sure it never happens again.

  2. When will this man simply stand up in Court and, as bushy would say – take his licks , like a real man. Yet again, what example is he setting to younger Caymanians – he is utterly pathetic.
