A veteran UK lawman has been named this afternoon as the new acting commissioner of the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service.
Royce Hipgrave is expected to arrive in Cayman on 18 November before current Acting Police Commissioner David George departs.
Mr. Hipgrave has served as a Chief Superintendent of the Sussex Police Service in the UK, as well as serving as Police Commissioner and head of immigration in the tiny British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena.
‘I understand that officers and staff of the RCIPS, and the public at large, are concerned about uncertainty in these challenging times,’ Cayman Islands Governor Stuart Jack said in a prepared statement. ‘I am confident that a professional handover from David George to Royce Hipgrave…will provide the continuity that is needed.’
The Caymanian Compass reported Monday that Mr. George planned to leave the RCIPS this month to return to the UK. The acting commissioner released a statement today which said he was leaving ‘to continue his life both professional and personal’ back in the United Kingdom.
Mr. George, who was on secondment from the UK Metropolitan Police, had been serving as Acting Police Commissioner since 27 March when Commissioner Stuart Kernohan was temporarily removed from office. Mr. Kernohan is currently being investigated in connection with a misconduct probe at RCIPS, but has not been arrested or charged with any crimes.
