Cayman draws blank in travel awards

The Cayman Islands lost out in the
2010 World Travel Awards, Caribbean section.

The gongs are handed out every year
and voted for by travel agents worldwide, who thought Jamaica was the Caribbean
leader in a number of categories, including the Caribbean’s leading destination
and the leading cruise destination. Ocho Rios was named the leading cruise port
in the region, Sangster International the best airport, and the conference
centre in Kingston the leading meeting and conference venue. The Jamaica
tourist board was also considered the best in the region.

The Caribbean’s best beach was
considered to be Grace Bay at Providenciales, Turks and Caicos. Travel agents
voted Coco Reef Resort in Tobago the leading hotel and Caribbean Airlines the
best carrier.

On a local level, those who voted
considered Little Cayman Beach Resort the Cayman Islands’ leading boutique
hotel and the Ritz-Carlton the leading resort.

The awards, now in their 17th year,
acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the global
travel and tourism industry. Nominations are based on the previous year’s vote
with the winner and four runners-up automatically qualifying the following
year. Destinations, hotels and tourism providers can also self-nominate. The
nominations are then vetted and inspected by industry experts who review
customer relations, service, standards, innovation and business acumen.

The online vote is open both to
travel and tourism professionals and, for the first time this year, the public.

The world final takes place in
London on Sunday, 7 November.
