The finalists for the 2010 Digicel
Pirates Week National Song Contest, sponsored by Digicel and the Caymanian
Compass, have been announced, and they reflect the breadth and depth of talent
the Cayman Islands has to offer.
The 10 were chosen by a secret
panel of three very experienced and talented music professionals on-island,
said deputy festival director Clive Rosteing.
“There was a record producer, a
well-recognised and talented singer who is a song contest winner, plus a
performer, producer and studio owner. They never knew the names of the performers
– all they had were numbers so nobody knew who anybody was.
“They judged the competition based
on lyrical content, melody, entertainment factor and the ‘wow’ factor. They
also looked for potential,” said Mr. Rosteing.
Indeed, such was the high standard
this year that several songs which showed a great deal of potential missed out.
“The standard was high, and as a
matter of fact one of the judges said that he heard a song which brought
goose-pimples to his arms, he was so impressed with it.”
Close-run
Every style was represented from
hip-hop to pop, rap and soca in what promises to be a very close-run event.
“I wish everybody luck because this
is going to be a very close competition. I heard some very good music and I
wanted to know who they were – when these people become successful I want to be
able to say I knew them.”
The top 10 who will be performing
on Saturday, 12 November are Rino Ciantar, Jordan Seymour, Mikey Spaid, Chelle,
Glen Scott, Jay Bass, Twin Star, Burmon Scott, Christina Pineda and David
Morgan. The final starts at the main stage on Cardinall Avenue at 8pm.
Despite the fact that the final 10
have been chosen, any of the entries online still has an opportunity to win the
People’s Choice vote. All 17 entries are online at caycompass.com/competitions.
You can vote for your favourite online at caycompass.com/competitions

Will the winners actually all be paid this year?
I’m just curious as last year, our friend who one second place in front of the entire crowd, was quietly told afterwards she wouldn’t receive her prize until January.
Then a week later, was called at home and told she didn’t actually place second, as a ‘mistake’ was made.
If you’d like me to mention her name, and post the link to the video of her winning live, just let me know.
Happy Pirate’s week.
