‘We meet or exceed your expectations’
Kenrick Webster was born in the
Cayman Islands and started his career when he joined the Royal Cayman Islands Police
Force as a cadet. After 18 months of service he was promoted to constable.
He served in various areas of the
police force, but most of his time was served in the drugs department as a
detective. He was instrumental in solving the first bank robbery of the Cayman
National bank in 1990. As a result of his good work, he received a commendation
award. He passed his sergeant’s examination and placed second overall.
While he was waiting for his
promotion, he started Webster’s Taxi Service and Tours with one black Caprice
classic car. He drove part time for six months then he bought another car that
his late Aunt Francine drove. Then later, he encouraged his aunt Erscelle,
brother Steve, cousin Sherrie and later his mother Rosa and the late Curtis
Seymour to drive. Kenrick decided to leave the police force, so he told most of
his colleagues and close friends his plans.
Mr. Webster says, “When I was
leaving the police force, most of my colleagues were worried that I would not
make it. Some of my friends asked me if I was crazy. They said, ‘you leaving a
good job to drive taxi’? I said, ‘yes’, and then I asked them what’s wrong with
driving a cab. They said that’s not sure money. I replied, ‘nothing in life is
sure’.”
In 1994 he resigned from the Royal
Cayman Islands Police Force and started running his business full time. His
client base doubled in the first year with repeat guest visitors and local
guests, and his dispatch fleet expanded to a total of 20 cabs. Webster’s Taxi
Service was the first dispatch service to have a uniformed staff and all
air-conditioned cabs.
In 1999 he built a small office by
his house and focused on expanding the tour business to accommodate incentive
groups and cruise ship passengers.
Where Webster’s is today
With the encouragement of his late
uncle Ben Allen Webster, he was able to change the transportation era in the
Cayman Islands. He sat on the Transportation Board, where he was instrumental
in the development of the National Tourism Management Policy and the Public
Transportation Regulation.
He also sat on the Board of
Directors for the Cayman Islands Tourism Association, where he represented the
entire transportation sector. In September 2006, Webster’s Tours acquired a new
office at 84 Breezy Way, formerly Breezy Castle Road. The office comprises of a
large reception area, accounts office, lunch room, restrooms, four storage
rooms, one mechanic and one paint area, a fuel containment rank and parking
area.
On 23 August, 2010, Webster’s Tours
Ltd celebrated the launch of the most modern tour bus in the Cayman Islands and
contributed more than 3,000 composition books to all Year 5 students in all
Government schools on Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac.
This new tour bus is competitive
with those within the region; it meets international standards and guests’
expectation. Today the fleet comprises 19 coasters, two Hiace vans, one luggage
truck, one Lincoln Town car and one Yutong bus, which is the latest addition to
the fleet.
“The best thing about
transportation is meeting new people from all walks of life and showcasing my
home, the Cayman Islands. There is always excitement and challenges,” he said.
