Inspired by the 2004 film, Calendar Girls, the topless supporters have discarded their shirts to be photographed for a 2008 calendar. The calendar, aptly titled ‘Support the Boobies’, is now on sale, with all proceeds going the Little Cayman National Trust and its ongoing efforts to save and support the Red Footed Booby birds.

Little Cayman boasts the largest colony of the Red Footed Booby birds in the Western Hemisphere. Unfortunately, the bird is in decline over most of its range, and it is believed by experts that the colony on Little Cayman now represents at least a third of its entire Caribbean and Atlantic population.

Each month of the ‘Support the Boobies’ calendar showcases an individual or group of residents posing topless in various locations around the island. Of course, adhering to the laws of the Cayman Islands, items have been strategically positioned to protect the modesty of the women.

‘It all started at one of our weekly Ladies Nights, much like in the movie Calendar Girls,’ one of the topless models said in a press release. ‘The suggestions were flying around the table, because, of course, not everyone is built the same… for some women a conch shell would be adequate for modesty protection, but for others it would not be enough coverage.

‘I never thought I would find myself posing ‘topless’ in public for a calendar that is now being distributed nationwide. We all just hope that the community sees this as what it is: A unique and very fun way to raise money for a very worthwhile cause.’

The overall concept and development of the project was pretty much completed during that Ladies Night and photography commenced in less than a week. Only days after the announcement of the project, many additional women bounced onboard.

And the enthusiasm did not stop there. Many local supporters jumped on board to help raise the money to print the calendar, including Janet and Bob Freemantle, Gari Sisk, Karon and Henry Hitch, Penny and Brad Place, KU-Wushocks-2007, Pia and Peter Hall and Diane and Mike Roche, plus other friends of the National Trust.
