Cayman Islands cricket heats up

Gideon Simms predicted a more competitive performance from Environmental All Stars this year. Judging from their resilient efforts against Esso last Sunday, he should not be second guessed.

In the Money Express Division One fixture, Environmental batted first, and were tottering at 41-5. This was due to an accurate and productive spell of new ball bowling by ‘Tall Pace’ Hewitt; 3-13 from 8 overs. Once the threat was removed, Dave Wilson gorged on the lackluster attack, blasting 67.

Earlier, opener Tim Bridges had made 32 at the top of the inning, and Oral Pendergrast had an attacking 29 at the end. A score of 184 all out, would prove to be enough to secure victory. Some economical bowling from Williams, Wilson, and Sicard, ensured that Esso would always be behind the required run rate. This created a panic resulting in the run outs of Sam Suberan (36), Fenton and Cato.

Sixteen runs in the last over, was just too much for the aggressive Ryan Ebanks, whose knock of 64 ended with Esso 6 runs short. David Johnson was the most successful bowler for Simm’s boys with 3-35.

Prison secured a victory over Police in a nail- biter on Sunday, when the Money Express Division One resumed at Smith Road. Prison after being invited to bat was dismissed for 176 in the 38th over. Nearly all the batsmen from 1-8, made a contribution, but Larry Cunningham and Troy David, each making 32, and Ryan Ebanks with 24, were the best of the bats. The ever miserly Clevie Hunte was Police’s best bowler, with 2-23, from his eight, while captain Ryan Bovell had the respectable figures of 2-31 from 7.

A valiant, independent effort by Pearson Best was not enough to prevent Police from falling short by 2 runs. For the entire innings the fortunes ebbed and flowed until the final over. Then the theatrics unfolded. Best, who batted superbly for 91, was dismissed 5 runs shy of the target. Dwight Rivers and Kevin Basil further reduced it to 2 runs to make in the final ball. Tanti Merle at Smith Road! ‘Captain Troy David to Kevon Basil. It is a faster one outside of, Basil swings and misses. Prison has won by 2 runs and there is pandemonium in the Prison camp!’ For the victors, Kevin Basil had the economical figures of 8-1-24-2, Saheed Mohammed 8-0-28-2, and captain David 7-0-27-2.

Division 2:

Cable and Wireless Combined Schools taught Winfair disciplined cricket, by registering a 68 run defeat over their opponents on Saturday at JPO. The schools batted first and got up to 148 -6 in 35 overs. Omar Willis top scored with 41, Ramon Sealy was on a patient 24 before he retired, and Marc Chin contributed with a cameo 22. Ivan Brown took two expensive wickets for Winfair.

School boys Kirvin Ebanks and Gregory Smith then shook Winfair’s top order with some telling blows, having them meandering at 25-3 in a tandem spell of

10 overs. Spin twins Dorado Thompson and school master Philip Hackett ensured that there would be no recovery. Thompson, 7-0-25-2, and Hackett, 7-1-19-3, left Winfair at a precarious 81-9. It took off-spinner Marc Chin just two balls to formalize the result.

In the other Division 2 match at Smith Road, the unfancied Caledonia Bank upset the much touted West Bay, by hitting the winning run in the last ball of the match.
