Sea swim a splashing success

The 2nd Annual CIASA 2-mile sea swim came off without a hitch recently as 59 swim-enthusiasts and 5 two-person relay teams participated in the popular long-distance swim. Race organizer’s concerns about unwanted moon jelly-fish and uncooperative weather were unfounded as the only sea-life swimmers witnessed during the race were a passing Hawksbill turtle, an elder sting-ray, and a young eagle-ray, coupled with perfect swim conditions.

From the youngest swimmer (Coral Tomascik at age 9) to the oldest, (Edelgard Weiss at 65), the event was enjoyed by all.

Crossing the line first was Stingray Swim Club’s Brett Fraser at 43 minutes and 37 seconds, followed shortly by fellow Stingray member Peter Stasiuk.

The top two women across the line were Stingray Club-members Brigitte Tomascik and Summer Flowers. Third place for male and female belonged to members of the newly formed Hammerheads Masters swim-club, as the husband and wife team of David MacDonald and Jeanine Rix put in an extra-ordinary performance over the 2-mile distance. The relay event was won by Team Hackenberg with a time of 1 hr 1 minute, who narrowly pipped the young swimmers of Team Flowers & Boothe.

The swimmers were escorted by the Marine Section of the Royal Cayman Islands Police, sporting their brand-new high-powered jet skis. All participants enjoyed post-race refreshments provided by Red Bull, Gatorade and Le Bleu water, under the Red Bull tent on the Courtyard Marriott beach.

The top two male and female finishers were treated to a beautiful 2007 calendar, generously donated by local photographer Courtney Platt. The Swim Association would like to thank Zulu for his generous cash donation towards offsetting the costs of the holding the event.

The next sea swim on the CIASA Open Water Calendar is the 18th Annual CUC Ltd 800m Sea Swim, being held on Saturday, October 28th.
