C&W, Digicel reach texting agreement

Sending text messages just got easier for Digicel customers, who can now text any mobile phone for only 5 cents per text through 30 June.

The special promotion follows an agreement reached between the Digicel Group and Cable & Wireless on texting interconnection, enabling customers of each company to send text messages to each other across the Caribbean as of 1 June, according to a press release.

The agreement means that Digicel customers can now text C&W customers, and vice versa. Digicel customers have been able to text to Cingular customers since July 2004.

Announcing the promotion, Digicel CEO J.D. Buckley said: ‘We are delighted to offer our customers the great low promotional rate of 5 cents to text all operators, and are very pleased that our customers can now text any carrier in the Cayman Islands. Now there are no barriers to staying in touch with friends and we remain committed to providing innovative and affordable ways to keep our customers connected.’

The ability to text across all carriers enhances the company’s texting service, which is already known for innovations such as the Call Me feature, which enables Digicel’s prepaid customers to send a text message even when they have no credit on their phones.

The service, launched in August 2004, allows Digicel phone users to send a free text message saying ‘Please call me’ to any Digicel number in the Cayman Islands or any other Caribbean island where Digicel operates.

Another convenient text service offered by Digicel is digiINFO, a wireless way to keep informed and stay up-to-date with news on a Digicel mobile phone.

By sending a text from a Digicel phone to 4636 (INFO), customers can choose from a menu that includes local and international news headlines; international stock market results; Top 10 music videos; jokes; horoscopes and more.

For example, if customers want to get the latest cricket news, they can simply text the word WINDIES to 4636 to get updates and scores.

digiCHAT is another new and innovative text-based service from Digicel.

digiCHAT allows users to ‘chat’ with as many as 30 other users in chat rooms using their Digicel mobile phones. It is based on a series of commands that are sent as a text message to 2428 (CHAT).

Digicel also periodically offers interactive text quizzes to customers, with prizes ranging from free phones to free-call credit. These contests allow customers to enter and answer contests via text, and are advertised through local media.

Further texting services from Digicel include Internet-based ways to send and receive text messages. E-mails may be sent to any Digicel customer from any personal computer by typing the Digicel number followed by ‘@digitextky.com’ in the e-mail address line, e.g [email protected].

Digicel customers can receive unlimited text messages at no charge. Receiving texts while roaming outside of the Cayman Islands is free, and sending a text back to Cayman while roaming costs just 35 cents per text.

The same texting charges apply for digiFLEX prepaid customers, as well as digiSELECT and digiSELECT WORLD postpaid customers.
