Daren Ganga is nothing but positive about his team and upcoming play in Sri Lanka.
‘The West Indies A Team is definitely a step in the right direction, ensuring there is a reserve pool of players for the coaches to pick from,’ Ganga said from his hotel room in London en route to Sri Lanka.
Ganga is captaining the team’s Sri Lankan tour, which will feature two test matches and four ODI matches against Colombo’s A Side.
Digicel, sponsors of West Indies A Team, caught up with the team en route, taking photos and wishing them luck.
The company also provided booklets to the team with sponsorship details and useful information about Sri Lanka, according to a company press release.
‘Digicel wants to provide as much support for the A Team as possible to help ensure a successful tour,’ explained Digicel’s Group Marketing Director Ben Atherton.
‘We are also doing as much as possible to bring news of the tour back to the Caribbean through our website (DigicelCricket.com) and through other unique initiatives to provide match reports and player features.
‘Our commitment doesn’t just stop at supporting the team; it’s vital for cricket fan’s to have up-to-date information on how they are progressing,’ Atherton said.
‘This is the first tour since 2002 in England, and for WICB to put this A Team in place with the support from Digicel is something we are very grateful for.
‘The A Team should tour at least every two years along with the home series, if that can be done, West Indies cricket can rest assured it will be giving very good players the right environment in which to develop their game,’ Ganga said.
‘It’s a good challenge for me and the whole team. It’s always a great honor playing for West Indies at any level, and we will all be working hard to achieve our individual and team goals.
‘It will be a tough tour, and Sri Lanka is passionate about cricket. I had the opportunity of playing in Sri Lanka when the West Indies toured in 2001, it was the tour when Brian Lara had an amazing series scoring a double and Test hundred in the same match,’ Ganga said.
‘The pitches tended to be batsman friendly and we’ll face a lot of spin bowling, but that’s all part of playing in different conditions.
‘The Sri Lankans also got the ball to reverse swing, so maybe that’s something our bowlers can exploit as well.
‘The team has a great deal of experience, with more than 80 per cent of the players having international experience. There is competition for places in the main team, and as they also tour Sri Lanka later this month, the competition for those places will create the right environment to bring out the best in every player,’ he said.
‘We are all really looking forward to the challenge, to play the game in the right spirit and achieve our goals.’ He Ganga said.
