Commissioner denies story

Acting Commissioner of Police Rudolf Dixon denied the accuracy of a Cayman Net News story of 6 September, which claimed that illegal drugs seized during a police operation were back on the streets for sale.

‘I assure the public that this allegation is totally false,’ he said.

Mr. Dixon said the advice from the Attorney General has been sought to address issues arising from the allegation.

Cayman Net News cited an anonymous female source who lives in West Bay and who admitted having been a consistent user of illegal drugs.

The source purported to know the scheduling of drug shipments to Grand Cayman and was therefore able to deduce that drugs that appeared in West Bay soon after the police operation had to have come from the shipment seized by police.

Mr. Dixon acknowledged that the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service operation referred to in the article did in fact lead to the seizure of ganja.

‘All drugs seized during the operation are still in the control of the police and can be accounted for,’ he said.

In the last sentence of the Cayman Net News article in question, Inspector Shaun Ebanks of the Drug Task Force also denies the allegations, calling them ‘a load of garbage’ among other things.

Mr. Dixon said the policies and procedures associated with the custody of evidence seized and disposed of by the police are standardised throughout the RCIP and that they have withstood the test of the courts.
