Today’s Editorial September 13: You go Minster

We never like to see anyone so upset to the point that it is obvious they are experiencing physical distress, but we were witness to it Friday.

That’s when Minister of Education Alden McLaughlin unloaded.

His target was the Cayman Islands Education Department. His venue was the weekly Cabinet press briefing.

His words hit the bulls-eye.

In a nutshell, Mr. McLaughlin is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore.

Fortunately for those in the top echelons of the Education Department, they are Civil Servants and can’t be fired.

But the good Minister can make life so unbearable for the offenders who have created a foul system of education that they slither away. He also has the ability to take away something very precious to the offenders – pay cheques.

His frustration at the calibre of education in the Cayman Islands has been evident since elections in May. Education was one of the top issues members of the People’s Progressive Movement promised they would tackle.

Mr. McLaughin is apparently making good on that collective promise, starting with an excellent education conference that included a broad spectrum of education stakeholeders.

The limits to his tolerance were pushed last week, though, when George Hicks High School was unable to open on schedule Friday.

That came on the heels of delays in the openings of several primary schools during the week.

Now he has set his sites on the leadership of the Department of Education.

We hope that leadership takes to heart Mr. McLaughlin’s comments and comes up with quick solutions.

If not, there’s going to be hell to pay. We think it’s a safe bet to take Mr. McLaughlin’s comments to the bank, something those under fire won’t be doing with their pay cheques unless things improve.
