Cabinet briefs

Ash disposal

Ash created by the post-Hurricane Ivan clean up would be safely transferred to its special lined cell at the garbage dump, Minister Arden McLean assured the Cabinet press briefing.

Safety requirements had been made on the transportation of the ash, he said.

The material would be transferred during less busy hours and loads had to be covered, he added.

Any vehicle used would be properly secured and the possibility of having the vehicles escorted was also being looked at, Mr. McLean told the briefing.

He said the cell was presently waiting for its special liner which was expected to be here and installed in the next few weeks.

Cramped conditions

Relocation of his ministry by early next year would overcome the present cramped conditions, Education Minister Alden McLaughlin told the Cabinet press briefing.

The space available for the ministry in the government administration building – presently 941 square feet – was inadequate for the services it needed to provide, he said on Friday.

‘It is an embarrassment for me to see how staff must manage in this very small space,’ said Mr. McLaughlin.

Lands and Survey were now negotiating for the relocation of the ministry, he told the briefing.

‘All going well, this should find the ministry relocated by early January 2006,’ he said.

London bound

Cabinet members will be travelling to London in mid October for Overseas Territories consultative committee meetings, the Cabinet press briefing heard.

Leader of Government Business Kurt Tibbetts said the agenda had not yet been finalised but there would be matters to do with various international financial initiatives.

It was expected there would also be discussions about the moving forward of the constitutional modernisation process, he told the Friday briefing.
