‘CIREBA’s support to Neighbourhood Watch efforts is a key way of demonstrating how being proactive can increase awareness and help in the effort to eliminate crime in Cayman,’ said James Bovell of RE/MAX Cayman Islands and President of CIREBA.
CIREBA’s partnership will help provide neighbourhood signs, T-shirts and also assist in the funding of other resources needed for the program.
‘CIREBA’s involvement comes at a beneficial time for Cayman. Prevention is the best weapon to use against crime. This partnership between CIREBA and the RCIP will help to protect homes, property values and neighbourhoods as a whole,’ said Derek Haines, Acting Deputy Commissioner of the RCIP. ‘It’s a great thing for the community.’
Recently promoted Chief Inspector, Adrian Seales will be overseeing the Neighbourhood Watch Programme.
‘The Neighbourhood Watch programme is an internationally successful programme that has proven over time to keep crime rates down,’ he said.
The International Neighbourhood Watch Programme was first introduced by the United States National Sheriffs Association in 1972. Since then, communities all across the world have been coming together and forging strong relationships by observing, recognising and reporting suspicious or criminal activities in their neighbourhoods.
The benefits of neighbourhood watch are:
Deters criminal activity;
Creates a greater sense of security and reduces fear of crime;
Builds bonds with neighbours; people look out for one another; it stimulates neighbourhood awareness;
Reduces the risk of becoming a crime victim; it reduces the physical, financial and psychological costs of crime;
Instructs residents on how to observe and report suspicious activities in your community; and
Addresses quality of life issues and mutual interests in your community.
‘Neighbourhood Watch is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime, attend to home and personal security, address the safety of our children and the elderly and reduce fear and isolation,’ said Jeremy Hurst of IRG Real Estate Ltd. local affiliate of Knight Frank and Vice President of CIREBA.
CIREBA is pleased to be able to offer this type of support to the Cayman Islands and feels that this partnership is an ideal fit with CIREBA’s goals of building stronger and safer communities, which benefit us all. We encourage residents to join this important programme.’
