It is so sad that someone who came to our country to help us in our efforts to save the Blue Iguana population met his demise on our shores.
While we don’t know the official cause of Daniel Hamilton’s death last Friday, we can make a pretty good educated guess that he suffered heat stroke.
By the time emergency responders reached Mr. Hamilton his body temperature had reached 106 degrees Fahrenheit. He and others were in an area of Grand Cayman that is not fit for humans to be working, but is perfect as a refuge for the Blue Iguana.
Responders had a tough time reaching Mr. Hamilton, treading through about two miles of rocky terrain and dense brush. They literally had to carve out a place for the police helicopter to land to pick up Mr. Hamilton.
Some have criticised the rescue operation, but we stand behind the people who did employ heroic efforts to get to Mr. Hamilton. The lack of a rescue basket on the helicopter because it doesn’t have a winch also shouldn’t be criticised. That chopper was not purchased for use as land-based rescue equipment.
It is hoped that their services won’t be required again because we hope people in Cayman realise what heat stroke is and how to prevent it.
One of the first signs is decreased sweating. Your body may even feel dry to the touch. Increased thirst, often the first sign of dehydration, also will occur. Other symptoms include fatigue, flushed skin, muscle cramps and rapid, very shallow breathing.
If you or a friend begin suffering these symptoms, it’s important to attempt to cool down immediately, with ice packs if possible. If things don’t improve within a matter of minutes, seek medical help immediately.
Heat stroke victims need immediate assistance to reduce the risk of organ damage.
Unfortunately Mr. Hamilton was miles away from civilisation.
If you are out in the heat make sure you have plenty of fluids and stay in the shade as much as possible. Stay indoors or in the shade during the hottest times of the day.
