Open water swimming is taking centre stage this week what with Penny Palfrey’s historic world record triumph on Sunday and the Flowers One Mile Sea Swim on Saturday.
Lots of prizes and cash will be on offer and, as always, one charity has been chosen to receive all proceeds from the Flowers event which starts at Royal Palms.
This year the beneficiary is Meals on Wheels. To kick off the fundraising effort, there is an event at Tiki Beach on West Bay Road on Thursday, Pasta With Champions. It runs from 6.30-8.30pm and costs $15 for adults and $10 for children under 10.
Penny Palfrey will speak about her world record breaking 67-mile bridge swim between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman and it will also be a chance to meet the top names in swimming, many of whom are world champions and Olympian medallists including Ian Crocker, Eva Fabian, Gary Hall, Gary Hall Jr., Kirsty Kowal, Maritza Correia McClendon and Chip Peterson who are all vying to win cash prizes. There will also be random door prizes and a silent auction.
Kerri Kanuga is organising this event. She is a passionate supporter of the Meals on Wheels programme. She said: “Response to the event has been great. The young athletes are really excited about meeting the elite swimmers.
“I am very excited to hear about Penny’s epic swim. We are trying to get as many people to this event as possible and plan on making it an annual event. The more people who attend the more funding for Meals on Wheels.”
The main door prize is a Cayman Airways ticket and auction items include the official time piece for Palfey’s swim, a Tag Heuer watch donated by Kirk Freeport. There is also an Avatar DVD donated by Frankie Flowers Jnr. and signed by Avatar star Zoe Saldana.
Kanuga added: “Meals-On-Wheels provides a nutritionally-balanced meal to home-bound, frail, aged people and those with physical and mental disabilities.
“We currently deliver 750 meals per week and we estimate there is a need for 1,350 per week. Our food cost per meal is $4. For the programme to feed all the deserving people, Meals on Wheels estimates that we will need to collect $300,000 annually.”
