Pascal gains ground

Alex Pascal has earned more props competing abroad.

At the recent Miami Classic athletics meet in Florida, Pascal, 16, nabbed gold in the open men’s javelin event. The victory at Miami Dade College’s Traz Powell stadium is not merely another medal for the Bodden Town native. It ensures the little league baseball player will have a busy summer competing at several athletics events.

Technical director for Cayman athletics Kenrick Williams witnessed Pascal’s Miami throws. He was present as team manager for his Hy-Tech Tigers track club. Williams spoke about the number of events in store for Pascal in the coming weeks.

“The Hy-Tech club had a clean sweep of the young men’s javelin event,” Williams said. “Alex came first, Dwayne Anglin-Folkes was second and Jahmi Dunbar was third. Alex is a gifted athlete that has taken his baseball throwing ability to javelin. He has made tremendous improvements.

“Our aim this year was for Alex to make every junior team. To his credit he has done so. He’s going to the International Association of Athletics Federations World Youth championship for track and field taking place in France 6-10 July. He is on the Pan-Am junior team competing in the US at the middle of next month. He’s going to the United Kingdom’s Isle of Man in September for the Commonwealth youth games. Those were the goals and he has achieved them.”

Pascal’s Miami showing comes after taking part in the annual Baytaf athletics meet held at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida last month. Prior to that Pascal, who turns 17 in October, has steadily competed in events such as the 2010 CARIFTA Games.

Coach Williams feels last year’s CARIFTA meet, which was staged in Cayman, had a big impact on his development.

“The 2010 CARIFTA helped him a lot. He did a personal best throw here in Cayman and starred alongside young Mauricio Terry. That experience opened his eyes to maintaining that level of competitiveness; which helped him this year.”
