One of the two men injured in an explosion at Caribbean Utilities Company Friday afternoon was airlifted to a Miami hospital early Saturday.
CUC representatives said Kurt Scott, 26, remains in critical condition and will receive further treatment for his burn injuries in Miami. Arrangements were being made Saturday to fly his family up to the hospital, CUC said.
Mr. Scott’s colleague, Arney Ebanks, 53, was in stable condition after the blast and remained at the Cayman Islands hospital Saturday.
The explosion occurred at 12.33pm Friday at the electricity company’s George Town headquarters.
The cause of the blast remains unknown.
Initial reports indicated the blast occurred in an area where the two men were working on a motor.
CUC later confirmed that the explosion had occurred on one of its nine-megawatt diesel generators.
The blast damaged the engine but has not affected service to customers, CUC said.
The blast was heard as far away as Grand Harbour and office workers in the Industrial Park area of George Town said they felt their buildings shake with the force of it.
Pat Bynoe-Clarke, corporate communications manager at CUC, said the explosion had damaged one engine, but had not affect power supplies to customers.
“Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing,” she said.
CUC President Richard Hew thanked the local police and fire services for a quick response to the incident Friday afternoon, as well as the hospital staff, CUC employees and other Island residents who helped at the scene.
