The Department of Environment has cancelled its planned Coral Fest event due to COVID-19 concerns.

The celebration of all things coral was originally supposed to be held on 6 Nov. last year, but as COVID continued to spread throughout the community, it was postponed to early 2022.

However, as COVID is still widespread locally, the department has announced that Coral Fest will not be going ahead for the time being.

“We’re not yet sure when we’ll be able to host the kind of in-person festival we envisioned, so in the meantime, we’re organizing a Covid-friendly alternative event with a virtual aspect that will allow us to celebrate our love of corals safely,” the DoE said in a Facebook post.

The department thanked those who had donated prizes, prepared presentations and organised booths for the event, adding, “We really appreciate all the hard work put in thus far so don’t worry, those efforts won’t go to waste… we have big plans for Coral Fest in the future!”
