More than 120 divers dropped beneath the waves on Saturday for Women’s Dive Day, to help raise US$11,303 for the Cayman Islands Breast Cancer Foundation.

Despite a challenging current, male and female divers took part in an underwater scavenger hunt at Divetech’s shore dive site at Lighthouse Point in West Bay, collecting stones that had been painted bright pink, which were exchanged for prizes once they’d returned to land.

Divetech owner Jo Mikutowicz, who has organised a Women’s Dive Day fundraiser for the past five years, says this was one was the most successful yet.

“This event is always a success due to the teamwork of so many people and businesses in the Cayman Islands,” she said.

With the help of fellow dive operators Off the Wall Divers, Ocean Frontiers, Red Sail Sports and Reef Divers, Divetech supplied more than 120 tanks and equipment to the participants.

“With over 100 prizes donated from many business around Cayman, we hid pink rocks on our dive site for divers to collect in a treasure hunt and bring back to receive their prize. In addition to that, we still had an raffle with amazing prizes, and vendors at the event, like Jacques Scott, 1981 Brewing Company, Peripheral Sunglasses, Central Caribbean Marine Institute and Mermaids Touch, were there to also contribute to the Breast Cancer Foundation, and pizzas were provided by Domino’s.”

As well as donations from the divers who took part, a number of businesses also provided the Breast Cancer Foundation with a direct donation, including CI$2,000 from Elite Marble and Granite, CI$500 from PM Industrial Gas/Pure Air and CI$500 from Wall to Wall divers, Mikutowicz said.

She added, “It’s definitely my favourite day of the year, we celebrate women in diving, the men come along to support the women divers in their lives and 100% of the funds go to the Cayman Breast Cancer Foundation.”
