The 2022 Pete Ribbins Memorial Ride/Run, which was held Sunday, 27 Nov., has raised $6,433.36, which will be donated to Jasmine, according to organisers Cayman Water.

Over 150 participants turned up for the memorial event at the Abel Castillo Water Works plant in Governors Harbour, where they took part in friendly competition in either a 40-kilometre ride, 10K ride, or 5K walk/run.

The event, which honoured the legacy of Ribbins, who passed away from Parkinson’s disease in 2010, featured many volunteers, including Felicia McLean, Jasmine’s director of operations and nursing, who cared for Ribbins during his illness.

Speaking with the Cayman Compass, McLean said the event was for a good cause and honours a good man.

“He was an amazing man,” she said of Ribbins, the former general manager of Cayman Water and competitor in the 1991 Iron Man World Championship. “He did amazing things, [was] an avid athlete and it is fitting that this is how they honour him.”

Ansley Easterlin, Jasmine marketing manager, praised Cayman Water for their continuous support over the years.

“They have put on this event for the last 10 years in support of Jasmine and I think it just shows a lot about their corporate citizenship and dedication to the community,” Easterlin told the Compass.

“Every year it gets bigger and better,” she said. “Of course, as a healthcare facility, we absolutely promote healthy living. This event raises thousands of dollars… that goes directly to someone who is facing a very difficult time in life and ensuring that they have the support that they need.”

She noted that the money raised at this year’s event will help ensure that no patient under the care of Jasmine will “ever receive a bill”.
