For the first time in nearly 60 years, cattle were seen on Little Cayman as the Agriculture Show returned to Blossom Village Park last Saturday.
Though the animals were not staying long term, their return to the island was one of the highlights of the show – back after a two-year hiatus – which attracted just over 150 people, including participants.
Chevala Burke, Sister Islands Agriculture Show committee chair, hailed the return of the show and the cows.
“We have the first cattle in Little Cayman in approximately 60 years. Family traditions are very strong in our islands and some of the owners of Paradise Farms are direct descendants of the last people to have cattle here on the island,” she said.
In her opening remarks, Burke also thanked Dwayne McFarlane and Felipe McField for bringing over the champion bull and champion cow from the Cayman Brac Agriculture Show.
The animals’ transport was sponsored by Thompson Shipping Limited.

The event, which was declared open by Governor Jane Owen as part of her first official tour of the Sister Islands, featured both a cake and a coconut-toss competition.
Owen, in a post on her official Facebook page about her tour, said she packed a lot into the day trip.
“On Little Cayman I visited the Central Caribbean Marine Institute’s station, the Little Cayman Museum, the National Trust and the Booby Pond Nature Reserve, met with the Department of Environment to learn about their important work and attended the Little Cayman Agricultural Show. It was wonderful to see the Little Cayman public there,” she said.
The event was also attended by Premier Wayne Panton and Ministers Jay Ebanks and Juliana O’Connor-Connolly.
Owen added that when she headed over to Cayman Brac she was joined by MP Moses Kirkconnell and attended a public welcome reception where she had her first taste of heavy cake.
“It was wonderful to meet so many members of the community. It was important to me to visit the Sister Islands ahead of the Coronation, but I will be back once I return from London to spend the night on each of the Islands,” she said.
