The Cayman Islands Postal Service is set to debut a new line of shipping packages that will give customers the opportunity to add their personal flair to the exterior of the boxes.

Melissa Martinez-Ebanks, deputy postmaster general, said she was excited to launch the new line for the public, all of which will be offered at a flat rate similar to their Caymankind boxes which were launched in 2018.

She recently spoke of the soon-to-be launched ‘cool box’ package through which perishables can be shipped internationally.

Growing the local market

She said while the Caymankind boxes were popular, the postal service wanted to offer small businesses and the public a wider range of packages that could be shipped at a standard rate.

She noted the launch of the ‘Express Yourself’ product, boxes that are blank on all sides except one that contains the postal service logo, which “are intended for senders who want to be able to customise their own products”.

As an example, she added, a child sending their grandparent a box could draw on it to create their own unique package.

She said the postal service has also partnered with the Department of Tourism to create unique packages for customers to ship artwork overseas.

These packages, she said, will come with $1,000 liability insurance.

“We have one that I am particularly excited about that we call the Art Box and it is a four- foot-square box that has one of the ‘Dream in Cayman’ series images in it that is specifically intended to mail framed art and other items which are lightweight but require some specialty packaging,” she said.

Showcasing Cayman talent

Martinez-Ebanks said the postal service will also be introducing for craft retailers three small boxes that are particularly marketed to fit in the standard US household mailbox.

“We have an absolutely gorgeous mail tube coming out,” she said, adding that the rates for the boxes have been submitted to government for approval.

Martinez-Ebanks said the postal service is working to assist small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reach markets outside of Cayman and have hired customer experience specialists to help grow their businesses.

“Our goal is to create an export market out of Cayman and to be an economic partner for people in Cayman by helping them get their products overseas. We believe Cayman has much to offer the world and we want to be a partner for our people to get Cayman out to the world, whatever it may be, whether it’s the pepper jelly or whether it’s some handcrafted items,” she said.
