Artwork and arrangements made with garbage collected at clean-ups competed for top prize at the Garden Club of Grand Cayman’s Flower Show this weekend.

From people fashioned with bottle caps to a waterfall of plastic containers, talented students from John Gray High School and John A. Cumber Primary School put the spotlight on the beauty that can be found in Cayman and why it should be kept clean.
Garden Club president Jill Wood, speaking with the Cayman Compass at Saturday’s event at the South Sound Community Centre, said she was impressed with the creativity of the students and their reuse of refuse items.
However, she said awareness of caring for the island from a community perspective was lacking.
She said the Club participated in the island-wide cleanup Saturday morning prior to the show, and was disappointed to see the volume of garbage collected.
“There were hundreds of people picking up bags and bags and bags of rubbish. Why throw it there in the first place? There’s bins everywhere. Why does it have to go into the bush? It’s very sad that [people] aren’t taking more pride in this island. It’s just thoughtlessness really, I think,” she said.
The message coming out of the show, she hoped, was for the community to care for the island.
This year’s theme for the show was ‘Cayman Past, Present and Future’.
The flower show, which was a two-day event on Friday and Saturday, featured specimens and horticultural displays from members.
