After a brief lull in activity, forecasters are projecting a tropical wave could develop into a tropical depression by early next week.

The tropical wave, which is currently located over the central Tropical Atlantic Ocean, is producing some disorganised showers and thunderstorms, the US National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its advisory on Thursday morning.

Isolated showers in Cayman on Thursday are expected to move towards the west. Light winds and slight seas are also expected over the next 24 hours as a weak pressure gradient dominates the region, the National Weather Service said.

Forecasters have given the system a 40% chance of formation through the next seven days.

The NHC said environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development of the system and a tropical depression could form while it moves westward at 10 to 15 miles per hour and approaches the Lesser Antilles.

“The system is then forecast to move westward to west-northwestward across portions of the eastern Caribbean Sea during the middle part of next week,” the NHC said.
