Police have vowed to continue a crackdown on crime in the Sister Islands after a “day of action” on Cayman Brac netted drugs and cash.
Brac officers, backed by reinforcements from Grand Cayman and Customs and Border Control officers, mounted extra patrols around the island and carried out checks in a variety of areas.
“Members of the public can expect to see similar days of action on a regular basis, continuing our collaborative approach to combatting illegal activities in the Sister Islands,” police said in a press release.
The operation, on 20 and 21 Nov., led to the arrest of two Brac men, aged 42 and 43, in connection with the seizure of suspected crack cocaine and ganja, and $31,000 in alleged drugs money.
The move came fewer than two weeks after ex-premier and Cayman Brac MP Juliana O’Connor-Connolly told Commissioner of Police Kurt Walton at a meeting of Finance Committee in Parliament that Brackers were concerned about increased drug use, “aggressiveness and prevalence of guns associated with it”.
She added that drug dealers on the island could be seen walking around with guns in their waistbands, that they were “not afraid to intimidate people”, and appealed for police action to tackle the problem.
Walton told O’Connor-Connolly, “I’m surprised to hear we have people walking around with guns at their waist. That, I’m really concerned about.”
He added that he had previously noted that there was an “insatiable appetite” for guns that he took “very seriously”, and promised action.
Walton said police earlier had carried out an operation on the Sister Islands, last month, when they made three arrests of people alleged to be involved in the drug trade after reports of increased use of crack cocaine.
He promised an increased police presence on the Sister Islands, partly because of the growth in drug use on the Brac and Little Cayman.
Walton added that police would also examine the “broader picture of how drugs are getting over there, by air or sea”.
Police said both men arrested in the latest operation had been released on bail and that inquiries continued.
