The Cayman Islands sports community is set to unite in remembrance and celebration as the Michael Gourzong Memorial Classic returns to the Cayman Islands Football Association Field in Prospect on Saturday, 27 June.
Marking a decade since Michael’s passing at the young age of 24, the day-long event will feature two of Michael’s favourite sports – football and flag football – in a community tournament involving adult, youth and primary school players.
Spearheaded by Michael’s mother, Olga Gourzong, along with family, friends, the Cayman Islands Football Association, the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association and other supporters, the event honours Michael’s memory while cultivating the sense of community that was so important to him.
Michael was a talented goalkeeper, having guarded the net for both Bodden Town Sports Club and Savannah United Church, and was known for his enthusiasm, kindness and love of sport. He was deeply respected by teammates, friends and the wider community.
“Ten years later, Michael is still deeply loved and missed by all who knew him,” said Mrs. Gourzong. “This Memorial Classic is a special way for our family and friends to honour his life, celebrate his passion for football and flag football, and bring people together in the spirit of friendship and sportsmanship. We invite everyone to join us as we remember Michael and the joy he brought to our community.”
The free event is set to kick off at 9:30am with an official opening ceremony and environmentally friendly balloon release, followed by a full day of football and flag football matches.
All members of the public are welcome to join the celebration. For more details regarding the event, persons can reach out directly to Mrs. Gourzong at 916-3167.
