In between, they went separate ways for their tertiary education.
Ms Welcome went to Trinity College in Ontario on scholarship, where she achieved academic distinction. She continued her studies at the University of Birmingham and University of Nottingham. Her master’s degree, which she obtained with distinction, was in international commercial law.
During summer holidays she worked with local law firms, the courts office and a judge’s chambers in London.
Ms. Welcome, who was articled to Attorney Sara Collins, will be joining Walkers’ litigation department, the court was told. She is the daughter of Police Sergeant Alden Welcome and Mrs. Debra Welcome.
Ms Scott, the daughter of Mr. Colford Scott and Mrs. Judy Scott, attended the United World College, obtaining an international baccalaureate. She went on to the London school of Economics, earning a degree in anthropology and law, before attending the College of Law in London.
During her summers, she held internships at Walkers and at a local bank, where she assisted with compliance.
Ms Scott was articled to Attorney Grant Stein. She will be working in corporate and international financing.
Mr. Foster told the court that Walkers’ training system involves a number of associates.
Everyone who came in contact with Ms Scott and Ms Welcome had been impressed by their commitment, ability and hard work. As new attorneys, they will continue to have the support and mentoring of senior associates.
In their first speeches before the court, the attorneys thanked their various sponsors and scholarship providers. They thanked family members and all who had encouraged them along the way to achieving their goal.
