Three men appeared in Summary Court yesterday accused of importing almost 2,000 pounds of ganja.
Crown Counsel Andre Mon Desir said the drug had an estimated street value of $8.8 million.
The men are also charged with possession and possession with intent to supply.
They are: Philmore Wayneworth Williams, 34, of St. Thomas, Jamaica; Ucal Dennis Buchanan, 34, and Henry O’Brian Buchanan, 31, both of Hanover, Jamaica.
Mr. Mon Desir said the men were arrested after a joint operation on 18 May by the Drugs Task Force of the Royal Cayman Islands Police and the Immigration Narcotics Enforcement Team. He said the men were ‘caught in the boat’ with a quantity of drugs.
According to details of the charges against the three, they were found at Jackson Point off South Sound.
The Crown objected to bail, in part because the men had no connections to this jurisdiction.
Defence Attorney John Furniss told Magistrate Nova Hall that he had been spoken to by someone who had spoken to legal counsel in Jamaica. He was willing to accept the documents in the case on behalf of the defendants until necessary arrangements were made.
The magistrate adjourned the matter until Wednesday, 1 June.
