Man on fire

Pearson Best, star batsman for the Police Cricket Club, finished the 2005 Division One season with a flurry of success. The 41 year-old batsman scored centuries in his team’s last five matches. Not only did he lead Police to the league crown but his hot streak is one for the history books, says Cayman Islands technical director Theo Cuffy.

‘This has never been done before in Cayman and possibly any where else,’ said Cuffy. ‘It’s unbelievable. He was in the zone, completely focused.’

Best credits his consistently good batting with becoming a more patient player.

‘Over the years I have been getting better and better with my shot selection,’ he said. ‘I’m a lot more patient now.’

Best says he felt constant pressure all season as his team’s primary run scorer. For Police to win, Best had to crank out the runs.

‘My fourth [consecutive] century against Prison was the toughest for me.’

Best says his body is worn down after his scoring explosion and he is trying to recover.

‘I’m feeling a bit old now,’ he admitted. ‘Five centuries take a toll on you.’

Cuffy says he is researching the hot streak to see if any other batsman has done it in any other nation’s domestic league. Regardless of how the feat stacks up, it is clear that Best is enjoying the best cricket of his life.

‘He has always been good, always a leading batsman,’ said Cuffy. ‘He has a very good attitude and he trains very hard. He takes his cricket very seriously. He’s also a good role model for our young players. He is quiet and unassuming. He just goes out and gets the job done.’

Best, originally from Barbados, has lived in the Cayman Islands for seven years. He has represented the Cayman Islands in international play.

Best is a member of the Royal Cayman Islands Police. He is currently stationed on Cayman Brac. Best says he has played cricket since he was a very young child.
