Digicel, Red Cross offer CPR

Digicel and the Cayman Islands Red Cross have designated June as Safety Awareness Month in the Cayman Islands, seeking to attract people to the Red Cross’ health- and safety-training courses.

The Standard First Aid with CPR course offered by the Red Cross usually costs CI$89.

Throughout June, Digicel has funded half of the cost of each course for up to 144 people, which is the maximum number of people who can take the course in any given month.

People signing up for the course will now only have to pay CI$44.50 for the six-hour courses. Both the Adult First Aid and CPR and the Infant and Child First Aid and CPR courses will be offered during the month at this special price.

Digicel CEO JD Buckley outlined the need for CPR training.

‘The goal of this programme is to promote the importance of people learning CPR. None of us want to be in a position of not knowing what to do in an emergency. These courses give you the ability to save a life in a dangerous situation. It is a vital skill to have at all times, and with hurricane season once again approaching we thought this was an appropriate time to promote the importance of this training.’

The Adult First Aid and CPR course offered by the CI Red Cross allows participants to learn how to determine the safe response to an emergency situation. This includes recognising and caring for life-threatening emergencies in adults such as respiratory, choking and cardiac problems.

This course also teaches care for injuries including burns, sprains and strains and sudden illnesses such as poisonings, bites and stings. Participants receive skills cards to use as reference guides after the course.

The Infant and Child First Aid and CPR course is designed for childcare providers, teachers, parents and others who care for children. The course teaches how to recognise and care for breathing and cardiac emergencies and how to use the Emergency Medical Services system effectively. Participants take home refresher skills cards as well as information about preventing injuries. This course applies to treating infants and children up to 8 years old.

Classes start at the CI Red Cross on Friday, 3 June. There are 12 class sessions held through 29 June.

Each class holds 12 participants. Eleven of the courses will focus on adult first aid and CPR, and one will focus on infant and child first aid and CPR.

One session will be devoted to training members of the National Hurricane Committee, and is not open to the public. Digicel is including this session in its programme and will pay half of the cost for each National Hurricane Committee member who attends. Digicel will also provide free CPR mouth shield key chains to all course participants throughout June.

During the regular schedule of CPR courses at the CI Red Cross participants are offered CPR mouth shields at a cost of CI$10 each.

CI Red Cross Training Manager Peter Hughes thanked Digicel for the company’s support: ‘We are extremely happy to have Digicel as a partner in our effort to train more people in first aid and CPR. It is important to be prepared in the event of an emergency, and our theme for this year is ‘family preparedness’, so we welcome this opportunity.’
