Education report doesn’t surprise

Education Minister Alden McLaughlin said at the Cabinet press briefing Friday that the report coming out of the recent education conference offers ‘very little surprise’ with regard to the issues.

The report is still in the process of being written, Mr. McLaughlin said.

‘It has just confirmed to me what needs to be done,’ he said.

‘We have to put the students at the centre of the system, and dismantle the hierarchy.’

The minister said the system that forces principals to go through the Department of Education to order every little supply must cease.

‘We must give the principals responsibility.’

Mr. McLaughlin made the comments one week after blasting the leadership of the Department of Education and stating he would not ‘stand for this level of incompetence in my ministry’.

Through last Friday morning, however, Mr. McLaughlin said he had not heard directly from the Department concerning his harsh criticism.
