Coin campaign helps kids

Children, parents and staff at a Cayman school found it hard to bottle up their feelings when they heard about the misfortunes of the young victims of Hurricane Katrina.

They set about filling all kinds of empty water bottles with coins from all over the world.

And after only two weeks Cayman International School’s Water of Life campaign raised CI$2,200.

That amount – matched by donations from Dart Realty and Camana Bay – means that an impressive total of CI$4,346 will be on its way to the Save the Children Fund to help the children affected by the hurricane.

‘Our kindergarten and second grade classes have been busy for the past two weeks collecting, sorting and counting the donations,’ said school director Greg Hedger.

‘Throughout the school and in every classroom you could spot water bottles of all shapes and sizes filled with coins from all over the world.

‘In fact, our students identified coins from 22 different countries,’ he said.

The children got the idea after remembering that drinking water was in short supply after Hurricane Ivan struck Cayman last year, Mr. Hedger told the Caymanian Compass.
