Emergency vehicles were called to the scene of an accident in George Town Wednesday morning after the lid blew off a holding tank at the North Terminal spraying some tourists with the diesel it contained.
The incident happened before 11am yesterday morning, as passengers were passing through the dock area at the back of the Port Authority’s building in George Town.
Deputy Fire Officer Roy Grant confirmed that the lid blew off the petroleum holding tank in the ground due to over pressurisation. There had not been a risk of fire. The lid had blown off the tank and diesel sprayed out of it. It was not an explosion, he affirmed.
Fire trucks and ambulances attended the scene where a number of tourists were being treated with oxygen, before being taken to George Town Hospital.
Also attending the scene were members of the RCIP, Port Authority officials, Customs officials, members of the Fire Department, medical personnel and the Petroleum Inspector.
Four ships were in port Wednesday morning: Imagination, Inspiration, Coral Princess and Voyager of the Seas.
Following the incident, passengers were re-routed and instead of coming through to the back of the Port Authority building, as they had been doing, they were sent through the main port gate.
No one from the Port Authority was available for comment by press time.
