Artist Barbara Holmes latest exhibition, Faces of Cayman, has been attracting considerable attention since it opened 8 February and has been extended an additional two weeks offering art enthusiasts extra time to view the artist’s colourful paintings.
Originally slated to finish at the end of February, the exhibition will now run until Sunday, 12 March.
Ms Holmes’ first solo exhibition for a number of years, the exhibition takes a cheerful look at the various faces of Cayman, from its smiling people to breathtaking landscapes, an area the artist has been busy exploring for a number of years.
‘The opening night was hugely successful,’ Ms Holmes said. ‘It was packed with a lot of people from the art scene as well as well as a number of government ministers.’
So well received has the artist’s artwork been a number of prints are now available. These include 13 of her most popular watercolour and pen and ink artworks, including Cayman Island Sunday, Heritage Kitchen, Seven Mile Beach Girl and Fanciful Palm.
The exhibition includes 36 paintings, a mixture of watercolour, acrylic on canvas and pen and ink. A number of pieces have been attracting great interest, including one of the artist’s particular favourites, Rooster and His Harem.
Acrylic on canvas, the 40 by 30 inch painting cheerfully depicts clucking hens and colourful roosters.
‘Before Ivan there were so many roosters and hens and many were viewed as a daily nuisance. After Ivan many were lost and it is inspiring to see them coming back. They are seen as a positive aspect and people are grateful that the islands wildlife is rejuvenating itself.’
Another favourite piece of the artists is Bubba and the Boys from Main Beach. Ms Holmes love of animals is delightfully depicted in this 24 by 30 inch painting, inspired by her dog and the beach dogs of Cayman.
‘I love animals, there is something beneficial and healing about being with them and I wanted to make sure that they were part of the exhibition,’ Ms Holmes explained.
The impressionistic artist has been a prolific painter for the past thirty years and has been working on artwork for Faces of Cayman for the past three years.
