A boat filled with 11 Cubans – 10 men and one woman – made its way to the reef at Breakers near the Lighthouse Restaurant Tuesday morning.
The group was met by officers from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Services, Immigration and residents. Some residents brought food to the Cuban migrants and others toted supplies.
But all 11 were rounded up, placed in a van and taken to the Immigration Reception Centre at Fairbanks, bringing the number of Cubans there to 51.
None of the group required medical attention, although their vessel ran aground and remains on the reef.
The Cayman Islands has a memorandum of understanding with the Cuban government to repatriate Cubans who land on Cayman’s shores.
