Officers prepare for battle ‘down under’

Two RCIPS officers are preparing to head ‘Down Under’ for the 2007 World Police and Fire Games thanks to the assistance of a local company.

Fortis Bank Ltd (Cayman) is the sole sponsor of the two-man squash team and has made the trip possible by donating US$6,600 towards flights and accommodation, said a press release.

DC Dean Smith (Financial Crime Unit) and PC Gabe Rabess (Bodden Town) will now be in hard training until the games in March 2007.

In 1985, the World Police and Fire Games Federation, a non-profit organisation, run by the Californian Police Athletics Federation, established the games for the first time.

Today, the games are a spectacular international sporting event, offering police officers, fire-fighters, customs and correction officers from around the world an opportunity to showcase their athletic excellence in over 65 sporting events.

Held biennially, the World Police and Fire Games will kick off in Adelaide, South Australia on March 16, 2007, making it the largest sporting event to ever be held in the city.

In 2005, a team of nine officers attended the games held in Quebec, Canada. They participated in running events, golf and squash. The team returned to Cayman with a Bronze Medal in the 10k Cross Country Running and the Gold Medal in the Men’s Senior Squash after Cayman’s Gabe Rabess defeated Hungary’s Ogonvsky Gihed in the final.

DC Dean Smith said: ‘We are delighted we have the opportunity to attend again and extend huge thanks to Fortis Bank for making it possible. In previous games we have done all we can to promote our sponsors and to raise the profile of the Cayman Islands and this time will be no different – although we hope to come home with more medals.’
