Degrees awarded during this ceremony included six Masters of Business Administration, four Masters of Science, 10 Bachelors of Science and 11 Associates of Science.

This year’s graduating class includes 31 students with focus and determination, who have, in many cases, excelled in their field of study, states a press release.

ICCI President Ms Elsa M. Cummings, notes that in spite of the challenges of repairing the campus since Hurricane Ivan, these students have tirelessly worked to obtain their respective degrees.

‘Most ICCI students are working full-time, many have families and their dedication is impressive and deserves recognition,’ she said,

‘While all of the students should be applauded for their efforts, of special note are the following undergraduate students graduating with honors: Yvonne P.J. Hines and Alok Kumar Singh, both graduating Cum Laude (grade point average of 3.5 and above) and Rayal Robert Bodden, graduating Magna Cum Laude (grade point average of 3.8 to 4.0). This is a momentous occasion for our students, our institution and for the entire Cayman Islands community.’

In addition to these honours, another graduate, Henry Bodden III, was recently recognized for scoring top honors on the comprehensive standardized test issued through the Educational Testing Service in the United States. This test is a mandatory requirement for ICCI students prior to degree completion. Mr. Bodden’s outstanding scores placed him in a top percentile internationally.

Class valedictorian, a title for the graduate with the highest grade point average, was held by Mrs. Shannon D. Broadbelt.

Mrs. Broadbelt issued a riveting and inspirational speech.

‘The diplomas we receive today are not only a symbol of our achievements, but are also a reminder of how fortunate we have been. Not everyone gets a chance to go to college, and very few have access to the quality of learning that we have received,’ she said.

Several other awards were presented to the graduates: the Cayman Islands Mission of Seventh Day Adventists Award for Community Service to Nicole Suzanna Ebanks; the Royal Bank of Canada Annual Scholastic Achievement Award to Nicole Suzanna Ebanks; the James M. Bodden Memorial Award for exemplifying the spirit of Volunteerism to Joseph Ebanks and the Cayman Airways Scholastic Achievement Award to Rayal Robert Bodden.

The ceremony opened with the processional and singing of the national anthem and national song followed by the invocation by the Rev. Robert Thompson Jr., Church of God Holiness, Red Bay.

Ms Cummings then offered greetings to all, with a scripture then read by Mr. Joseph Ebanks.

Long-time ICCI trustee, Ms Heather Bodden, introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Alden McLaughlin Jr., Minister for Education, Training, Employment, Youth, Sports and Culture, who challenged the graduates to ‘strive for excellence in all you do. Excellence is the result of caring more than others think wise, risking more than others think safe, dreaming more than others think practical, and expecting more than others think possible.’

Acting Dean Samantha Tibbetts, Acting Registrar Anita Smith and Ms Cummings presented the classes for graduation, with diplomas handed out by Ms Lucille Seymour along with Ms Cummings and ICCI Campus Director Mr. Lyndon Martin.

An expression of appreciation was made by Mr. Woodward DaCosta, trustee, followed by the benediction by Mr. Thompson. Prelude and recessional piano accompaniment were performed by Mr. Mark Minott.
