RBC School Sailing circuit launched

The Cayman Islands Sailing Club (CISC) has announced the launch of the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) School Sailing circuit, a new initiative to improve the sailing proficiency of local students.

The RBC School Sailing circuit, launched at the beginning of January, is an all-new three-month sailing season for local students.

The students will learn a variety of sailing and racing techniques during weekly after-school sessions in January and February, before getting a chance to put those skills to the test in a series of Saturday-morning races in March.

Schools whose students are encouraged to participate in the circuit comprise Cayman Prep & High School, St Ignatius Catholic School, the Cayman International School, John Gray High School and the new George Hicks High School.

Initially, the students will take part in fleet racing but the aim eventually as students improve is for schools to compete in a team racing format.

Points will be awarded for placings in each race, with prizes on offer to the season’s overall winners.

Mike Weber, the CISC’s Director of Sailing, praised RBC for its generous backing of youth sailing in the Cayman Islands.

‘For some time it has been an ambition of the Cayman Islands Sailing Club to launch a more competitive structure to our school sailing and racing programme, and thanks to RBC’s wonderful support, we are now able to realise this dream,’ he enthused.

The CISC-affiliated National Sailing Centre has become a centre of excellence for the development of youth sailors who one day might go on to represent the Cayman Islands in international competition.

‘Although our goal is developing elite athletes, for now these students are learning raw sailing skills – body positioning, footwork, sail trim – the building blocks upon which they will use to grow into solid racers,’ Mr Weber said.

The support for the CISC from RBC comes at a time when a growing number of private sector organisations are backing the club and the National Sailing Centre.

Current sponsors of CISC boats and events comprise Butterfield Bank, Conyers Dill & Pearman, Corporate Electric, Digicel, Harbour House Marina, International Management Services (IMS), Kirk Office Supply, KPMG, RBC, Scotia Bank and Stuarts Walker Hersant.
